Goulburn Valley Football League Cancel Season

The Goulburn Valley league will enter straight into its finals series in the coming weeks.

Competition officials announced on Friday the remainder of the home and away season had been called off due after a new Covid-19 case was confirmed it Shepparton.

It means teams will not play the final two rounds of the season will not be played with the make-up of finals still to be determined.

2019 runners-up Echuca will claim the minor premiership ahead of Euroa and Seymour on percentage.

GVL board chairman David Roff said the decision was made in order to keep the community safe.

“The GVL Board has agreed unanimously to cancel the remaining two rounds of the GVL home and away season,” he said.

“We need to allow time for contact tracing to occur to ascertain if any close contacts exist within clubs.

“The board felt that it was in the best interest for the health and safety of everyone in all our communities to cancel all scheduled games for rounds 15 and 16.

“The future of the finals series will be assessed as we received additional advice from the relevant authorities and will be discussed at a president’s meeting scheduled for early next week.”GVL

If the competition is to keep its top six finals format it will mean Benalla and Mansfield will miss out on the chance to compete for a premiership by half a game.

A draw between Rochester and Mooroopna earlier this season has them occupying fifth and sixth spots on the ladder.

Reigning premier Kyabram sits in fourth position.

The Kyabram District league has also called off its weekend’s matches.
