Myths surrounding COVID-19 are spreading as fast as the virus itself.

A Current Affair asked General Practitioner Dr Brad McKay to put some of those rumours to bed.

CAN DRINKING LOTS OF HOT WATER PREVENT YOU FROM GETTING THE VIRUS?

There’s no evidence that that would do anything at all for coronavirus.

Some some people are saying if you’re drinking water over 27 degrees then that’s a guaranteed cure, but your body is 37 degrees celsius so you’re really not going to be cooking the virus.

DOES BEING OUT IN THE SUN, OR EXPOSING YOURSELF TO TEMPERATURES HIGHER THAN 25 DEGREES PREVENT YOU FROM GETTING COVID-19?

There’s a weird rumour doing the rounds that ultraviolet light is a guaranteed way of killing off the coronavirus. So if you go out into the sun that’s what you can do to disinfect yourself – that’s really not true.

We know the coronavirus is easily spread, whether it’s summer or winter around the world. If it’s over 25 degrees celsius, we are still finding cases where people are getting infected.

IS HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE A POTENTIAL CURE?

The studies that have come out so far on hydroxychloroquine have been very rough. The statistics have been terrible and so they’re making very broad assumptions based on a terrible study.

For example, four people that died during the study who were given hydroxychloroquine weren’t included in the final results because they perished – so when you’re cutting out some of those people who have already died who did take the drug, you can see how the study isn’t really going to make sense in the end.

COULD HERD IMMUNITY POTENTIALLY WORK IN AUSTRALIA?

To provide herd immunity, so to have enough people who don’t get the virus again, you’ve got to have sixty to seventy percent of the population being infected.

The problem with that is that you’re going to have hundreds of thousands of people die in that process. So whoever is left will be immune, but you’ll have a massive knockout effect throughout the population and we don’t want that.

DOES BLOW DRYING YOUR FACE DO ANYTHING TO STOP THE CORONAVIRUS?

I think this rumour was created because of the heat issue… So certainly if you’re cooking food, for example, getting it over 70 degrees celsius, then you’re probably going to degrade the virus over time from that cooking process. If you’re trying to blow hot air down your throat by the time you get to 70 degrees you’re just burning your windpipe and your lungs.

It’s not going to help with the virus and you could actually cause significant damage to yourself.
