The village of Mt Eliza is known for its stylish boutiques and cafes but it was music that bought the crowds to town recently for a free local community event.

The Gig on the Green hosted some outstanding musical talent, with performances by Captain Spaulding (a popular covers band); Andy Phillips and Cadillac Walk; Jesse Valach and Blues Mountain; and many more local artists and young buskers. Audiences were entertained into the evening on the central village green, with the crowd dancing and singing along.

Hundreds of people were drawn to the event in early February, which included a number of stages and was organised by a team of community volunteers.

The Gig on the Green came about after the success of the Mt Eliza Music Festival in 2017. Despite the original event organiser moving on to other projects, the Mt Eliza Chamber of Commerce decided that in 2018 the show must go on. So the event was given a new name and rebranded. A key motivation was to keep it a free for all to enjoy.

A number of local organisations were in support of the day, including Ryman HealthcareCharlton Degg and Jonathan Rivett Estate Agents. The Mt Eliza Community Bank® branch of Bendigo Bank was also a proud sponsor, as was local community radio station RPP FM. Many more local retailers threw their support behind it by opening their doors to trade on the Saturday afternoon.

The Mt Eliza Chamber of Commerce (an organisation made up of representatives from the local main street traders) was looking to create an event that had broad appeal for all ages and would bring people to the village to support local businesses. The idea with multiple stages is to ensure that audiences circulate around the village.

Mt Eliza Community Bank® Branch has a particularly close association with the Mt Eliza Chamber of Commerce, having a seat on the chamber committee. The branch worked closely with them on the organisation and event management for the Gig on the Green.

“Our branch was really proud to bring this music event to the village again this year”, said local board member, Alex Godfrey. “It’s free community events like this that make Mt Eliza such a great place to live and work. It was delightful to see so many people, of all ages, enjoying themselves so much.”

Community events don’t just happen by magic. The Chamber of Commerce volunteer committee took the lead to plan and manage the project. Dozens of local volunteers from Mt Eliza Rotary and Lions clubs and the Community Bank® branch helped with the set up logistics and operations on the day.

“It was a real community team effort. I had a number of people come up to tell me how well organised the event was, and how much they enjoyed it. It was a credit to everyone who rolled up their sleeves to make it a success,” said Alex.

The Gig on the Green, and other local events are cementing the town’s reputation as host of some wonderful free community events. The Mt Eliza Community Bank® Branch is proud to support them.
