IT MAKES for sombre reading.
Since Tyabb’s last victory, when it defeated Somerville 32 points at Bunguyan Reserve in Round 18, August 10, 2013, it had suffered 49 consecutive defeats, including three by more than 200 points, 25 by more than 100 points and another seven by more than 10 goals.
There had been signs a victory was close, none more so than in consecutive heartbreaking losses by under a goal to Pearcedale (when an after the siren kick was unsuccessful) and Devon Meadows in Rounds 6 and 7 this year.
But a third consecutive winless season was well and truly on the cards entering Saturday’s final match against Pearcedale at Bunguyan Reserve, especially considering Tyabb had kicked just five goals in its previous three games combined.
By quarter-time, however, the Yabbies had kicked six unanswered goals, led the Panthers by 38 points, and it was quickly becoming clear that something special was on the cards for the long-suffering players and supporters.
When that stretched to nine unanswered goals and a 51-point advantage at half-time, the champagne was going on ice.
They ended up kicking the first 11 goals of the game to get out by as much as 61 during the third term, as Darcy Underwood, Tim McGrath and Jake Beckwith ensured this wasn’t going to be the one that got away.
Luke Rigg, Josh Simpson and Trent Wreford also stood tall and Jason Baxter kicked three goals as one of the youngest Yabby line-ups for the season finally got some reward for all their hard work.
Pearcedale did kick six of the last eight goals to cut the final margin to 37 points and put some respectability on the scoreboard, led by Bryce Dinger and Travis Bravo, but Tyabb was in party mode by then.
It had been 1099 days – or three years and three days to be exact – and with the reserves winning as well to finish with three victories in their last four games, it’s fair to say the party is still raging at Bunguyan Reserve – and whoever wins the premiership in four weeks will be hard pressed to top it.
———————————————————————————–
Frankston celebrated Brian O’Carroll’s 150th game by sealing the minor premiership with a dominant 27-point win over a listless Hastings in the Telstra Stores Mornington and Rosebud RPP FM Match of the Round at Greg Beck Oval.
With virtually no chance of pinching the double chance and avoiding a second consecutive Elimination Final against Red Hill, the Blues rested coach Brendan Dunne, captain Paul Rogasch and No.1 ruckman Josh Mulheron, and were blown out of the water in the first term.

The Bombers piled 6.6 to 0.0 onto the Rye Hotel Scoreboard in the first term as Mornington Peninsula Brewery Player of the Day Sam Fox produced a dominant performance to further stake his claim to being a contender for the George Osbourne Medal later this month.
Jason Kingsbury, Dale Sutton and Josh Francis were outstanding through the middle, Ryan Kitchen dominated the ruck, Luke James was on fire at full-forward and Michael Maiorino was always dangerous.
On the rare occasion Hastings ventured forward, invariably due to easily the Blues’ best player Shaun Foster, the attacks were easily repelled by Ryan Marks-Logan, Jarryd Amalfi and Jay Page.
A quarter-time reset had the desired effect for Hastings, with Steve Williams, on debut after 70 games in the lower grades, snapping the Blues’ first goal to spark a run of six of the next seven goals to cut the margin to 13 points in time-on.
Luke Hewitt started to make his presence felt up forward, Matt Clifford and Jake Hewitt worked hard across half-back, and Jay Austerberry put his hand up to retain his spot in the team for next week.
But Frankston found an answer, with three goals in the last three minutes of the term, including two to Zac Longham, to re-establish a 31-point break at half-time and break their opponents’ hearts.
The Bombers then piled on eight goals to three in the third quarter and led by 72 points at one stage before putting the cue in the rack and allowing the Blues to kick six unanswered goals in the final quarter to bring the margin back to one which was clearly flattering.
Sorrento was left to wonder what might have been after blasting finals-bound Red Hill by 55 points at Red Hill.
The Sharks’ inconsistency killed their season, but they found the perfect way to finish in a result that could and should have been much bigger.
Luke Tapscott kicked five goals in a best on ground display and Leigh Treeby was also outstanding, while the Hillmen had few winners as they too may have been guilty of turning their attention to the bigger games to come.
Rye produced a blistering final quarter to edge out Dromana by one point in a thrilling finish at RJ Rowley Reserve.
Trailing by 21 points at the last change, the Demons kicked six goals to two in the last quarter as Jye Lloyd and Kris Bardon dominated and Adrian Gileno and Dean Millhouse kicked four goals each to deny Dan Geurts and his Tigers.
Rosebud celebrated Ben Schultz’s 250th club game and Rhys Bancroft’s 150th senior outing with an 82-point belting of Devon Meadows at Olympic Oval, while Somerville brushed aside Crib Point by 90 points at Crib Point to set up a mouthwatering qualifying final this week.
IN THE Peninsula League, it took just one quarter of football for Edithvale-Aspendale to all-but complete a stunning collapse to miss the finals after looking certainties a month ago.
When the Eagles brushed aside Langwarrin in the Telstra Stores Mornington and Rosebud Match of the Day on July 16, they were 10 points clear of sixth-placed Seaford in fourth spot on the ladder, and harboured hopes of challenging Pines for the double chance.
But they have lost their past four matches, capped by a collapse from 19 points up at three quarter-time to lose to Karingal by 14 points at Ballam Park on Saturday to leave themselves the uneviable task of knocking over raging flag favourite Frankston YCW in the final round to have a chance of playing finals.
Seaford has won three of its past four to move into fifth, and its bye on Saturday meant it could only watch on nervously as everything fell into place.
Should the Tigers upset Mt Eliza, not even a victory over the Stonecats will save Edithvale-Aspendale.
On Saturday, both teams struggled to make an impact early, with the Eagles kicking the only goal of the opening quarter, but it looked like the class was coming to the fore when the visitors kicked four goals to one in the second term for a 22-point lead on the back of strong form from Brendan Neville, Liam Harris and Todd Woodbridge.
But with Mick Meehan being held to just one goal, the wheel started to turn in the third term, with the Bulls adding three goals to two to remain within striking distance.
And Michael Burke, Callan Dixon and Christian Matthews got a taste of blood, exploding in the last term with six goals to one to claim their fifth win of the season.
Frankston YCW needed a final quarter rally to see off another challenger to its throne in a 36-point win over Bonbeach at John Coburn Oval.
The Stonecats kicked four goals to one in the first quarter, but while they conceded just eight scoring shots to 24, they were unable to shake the tenacious Sharks and led by just eight points at the final change.
Bonbeach had kicked 7.0 at that stage and was close enough if good enough, but the champ sensed the danger and produced its trademark finish with 4.5 to 0.1 for a comprehensive victory.
Anthony Bruhn kicked four goals and Paul Minchington three for Frankston YCW, who also had Sam Widdowson and Kyle Hutchison in sublime touch, while Luke Damon booted three goals and defenders Ash and Nick Waterstone held back the tide for as long as possible.
Third spot is still possible for Bonbeach, but it needs to pick up 8 per cent on Pines, with both teams favoured to have strong wins over Langwarrin and Chelsea respectively.
Mornington had 10 goalkickers in a comfortable 38-point win over Langwarrin at Lloyd Park, while Jordan Capkin booted six majors to lead Mt Eliza back onto the winners list in an 86-point beating of wooden spooner Chelsea at Chelsea.
