JONTY’S JOTTINGS
Round 12 by Brendan Rhodes
Saturday, 9 July 2016
THE unpredictable nature of the thrilling Nepean League finals race took another twist on Saturday when Somerville bounced back from two poor performances to outclass Sorrento by 32 points in the Telstra Stores Mornington and Rosebud RPP FM Match of the Day at Somerville.
The Eagles slumped to seventh on the back of thrashings from Dromana and Rosebud, but hit back in style to lead all the way and send the Sharks tumbling from third to sixth on the congested ladder.
Somerville’s forward line had been ineffective against the Buds, but the shift of Ben Sedgwick turned it into a devastating multi-pronged attack, despite the absence of leading goalkicker Tom Shaw and his sidekick Luke Rowe being held goalless on the Rye Hotel Scoreboard.

The assault was led by a Mornington Peninsula Brewery Player of the Day performance from Jedd Sutton, who booted five majors, while mobile big man Ben Crowe also kicked five and Sedgwick and Billy Rolfe snared three each.
The Eagles were also too good down back, where Kane McKenzie marshalled the defence brilliantly, Rowan Hogenbirk continued his impressive season and Scott Simpson rediscovered his form to hold Sorrento matchwinner Nick Corp to just two goals.
Danny Stephenson, Guy Stringer, Jarryd Ferguson and Luke Tapscott keep the Sharks in touch, trailing by 17 points at the final change, but Somerville always had the answers and ran out comfortable victors.
The Eagles remain in seventh place on the ladder, but are only four points and percentage adrift of ladder-leader Frankston in an amazingly tight finals race, while Sorrento will be hoping for a better performance to celebrate Brent Kenyon’s record-breaking 263rd game when it hosts Dromana this week.
Red Hill took advantage of Sorrento’s slip up and vaulted into the top three with an impressive 26-point defeat of Hastings at Thomas Barclay Oval to celebrate lion-hearted ruckman Seamus Thompson’s 100th senior game.
The Hillmen looked shot early as the Blues bounced out the blocks with a six-goal-to-one blitzkrieg that gave the home team at 32-point lead at quarter-time, with Nathan Grey in outstanding touch and forwards Luke Clark (three goals), Luke Hewitt (three) and Colin McVeigh (two) looking dangerous.
But Red Hill turned things around just as quickly, booting five to one in the second term to take the lead by half-time as young gun Jonah Siverson dragged his team back into it and Harry Larwill and Jono Ross kicked four goals each.
The Hillmen took the upper hand in the third quarter when they nullified Hastings’ second rally, and with their tails up, Ben Poole and Mitch Wallace charged away with six goals to two in the last term.
Rye moved back into the top five with a comfortable 35-point win over Pearcedale at RJ Rowley Reserve.
The Demons never really shrugged off the plucky Panthers, who were led by four goals from Troy Jacobson, but with Nathan Henley booting six at the other end, they were never really troubled either.
The real turn-ups occurred in the Peninsula League, where Mt Eliza and Edithvale-Aspendale brought the finals race to life with stunning upsets of top two teams Frankston YCW and Pines respectively.
That might be a little unfair to the third-placed Redlegs and fifth-placed Eagles, but the Stonecats and Pythons had started strong favourites.
Frankston YCW entered its clash against Mt Eliza at John Coburn Oval on a 25-match winning streak and had beaten the Redlegs by 94 points as recently as May 28, but the absence of stars can bring down the best of them.
While Mt Eliza’s best player Justin van Unen was missing after a call-up from VFL club Essendon, but that was more than balanced out by Brenton Credlin, Byron and Anthony Barry, Kyle Hutchison and Ryan Santon being on VCFL duty for Frankston YCW.
And it showed, with the visitors taking control early, answering a second-quarter challenge and then running away with it in the second half on the back of a dominant display from Casey Scorpions-listed star James Freeman, who kicked six goals.
Tom Freeman, Darren Booth and Matt Lillie also starred for Mt Eliza, while the Stonecats were best served by Craig Nankervis and Tony Lester.
Six goals from star full-forward Mick Meehan sparked Edithvale-Aspendale to its 20-point win over Pines at Regents Park, but it was the support he found that was just as important.
The Eagles have struggled to find other avenues to goal, but against the Pythons they had eight goalkickers, while Craig Wray was outstanding in defence and Jack Doman, Brendan Neville and Tim Mannix also fired.
Edithvale-Aspendale took control with six goals to one in the second quarter and was able to hold Pines at arm’s length for the rest of the day, with the Pythons sorely missing the presence of VCFL representative Tim Bongetti.
While its other stars in captain Beau Hendry and key forwards Aaron Edwards and Guy Hendry (three goals each) were up and and about, Pines was unable to make any headway after the main break and may have opened the top three door to the Eagles and Bonbeach.
The Sharks did their bit, outlasting Mornington by 14 points at Bonbeach with
Shane McDonald kicking five goals and Matt Douglas best on ground to see off the challenge of Joel and Warwick Miller.
Seaford and Karingal need to keep winning to have any chance of finals action, and while they saw off Langwarrin and Chelsea by 56 and 47 points respectively to uphold their end of the bargain, Edithvale-Aspendale’s win could prove a dagger to their hearts.
Aaron Walton (six goals) and Nick Braund (four) were dominant for the Tigers against the Kangaroos, while Chelsea had no answer to the Bulls’ many goalscoring options, led by four each to Aaron Paxton, Leigh Poholke and Chris Hay and three to Harry Czarnecki.

THE TOP FIVE MAYBE JUST ABOUT SEWN UP AFTER EDITHVALE-ASPENDALE’S UPSET WIN OVER PINES, BUT THE EAGLES NEED TO KEEP THE MOMENTUM GOING AGAINST THE INCONSISTENT BUT DANGEROUS LANGWARRIN IN THE RPPFM 98.7 TELSTRA STORES MORNINGTON AND ROSEBUD MATCH OF THE DAY AT LLOYD PARK ON SATURDAY. CAN THE ROOS BREATHE LIFE BACK INTO THE TOP FIVE RACE OR WILL THE EAGLES KEEP PRESSURE ON THE TOP THREE?
