JONTY’S JOTTINGS
Round 8 by Brendan Rhodes
Saturday, 4 June 2016
FRANKSTON powered to the top of the Nepean League ladder and opened up a significant gap between the top five and the rest with a convincing 35-point victory over Red Hill in the Telstra RPP FM Match of the Day at Red Hill Recreation Reserve on Saturday.
The Bombers needed to beat a fellow contender to prove their worth after falling to Somerville and Hastings earlier in the season, and they took just one quarter to ensure they couldn’t be left out of the premiership calculations for the rest of the season.
With star midfielders Dale Sutton and Sam Fox in dominant form and makeshift ruckman Corey Micari outstanding as he filled in for absent pair Max Pretty (overseas) and Ryan Kitchin (suspended), Frankston took control from the opening bounce, booting 5.5 to 1.0 for a match-winning 29-point lead on the Rye Hotel Scoreboard at quarter time.
The Hillmen weren’t lacking for effort, but were simply outclassed and it was a case of trying to hold back the tide for Jeremy Monckton, Sean and Luke Marchetti and Matt Hyden.
Whenever Red Hill did go forward, Jarryd Amalfi and Ryan Marks-Logan repelled them at every opportunity, allowing coach Beau Muston and captain Jay Page to set up plenty of forward thrusts.
Frankston had plenty of winners at that end too, with Scott Foster outstanding and Zac Longham, Michael Maiorino and Jake Foster always looking likely to score.
Red Hill tried to battle back into the game, and managed to break virtually even for the rest of the day, but whenever it looked like threatening, it brought itself undone with indirect play when it needed to take the game on and go straight up the middle.
The Hillmen’s cause was also not helped by being one man short for 20 minutes, after a fight between Ben Poole and Bombers star Nathan Lonie just before half-time saw both players yellow carded.
A bleeding Poole was then reported by two umpires for striking Lonie again as the pair were making their way off the field, earning a second yellow card which was commuted to a red before the second half got underway.
Sutton spent most of final quarter on the bench with cramp, an issue which affected players on both teams, but his outstanding first three quarters when the game was up for grabs was enough to see him named the Mornington Peninsula Brewery Player of the Match, while Scott Foster also failed to finish the game with what appeared to be back spasms.
Rye breathed life back into its season provided more proof of how even the competition is with a stunning 34-point upset of Hastings at RJ Rowley Reserve that tipped the Blues off the top of the ladder.
The Demons’ season was hanging by a thread and they needed a win to stay alive, and responded in gutsy fashion – led by talented youngster Harry Devine-Richardson, experienced star Ryan Mullett and gun forward Matt Greig (four goals).
Rye led by a point at half-time and stepped it up a notch in the second half, kicking 3.4 to 0.2 in the third and 4.3 to 2.2 in the last for a head-turning win.
Shaun Foster, Brendan Dunne and Paul Rogasch tried hard to keep Hastings alive in what was a wasteful display, but Jimmy Jennings, Leigh Morse and Dean Millhouse were too desperate.
Rosebud opened up a six-point gap inside the top five, outgunning Crib Point by 84 points at Crib Point.
Keegan Downie’s four goals and Greg Bentley’s class were important in the win, which was vital given sixth-placed Red Hill has a game in hand against Dromana this week.
Dromana will also look to the Queen’s Birthday clash against the Hillmen as a chance to keep its season alive after a blistering second quarter saw the Tigers past Tyabb by 47 points at Dromana.
Rikki Johnston had kicked just one goal for the season, but booted five to see off the improving Yabbies, who were more than competitive apart from that 7.7 to 2.1 blast leading up to half-time.
Nick Corp (six) and Luke Tapscott (four) were dominant in Sorrento’s 74-point dismissal of Pearcedale at Pearcedale, while Somerville wasted the opportunity for a big percentage booster in kicking 18.22, but were still untroubled in beating Devon Meadows by 66 points at Glover Reserve, setting up a four-way tie at the top of the ladder on six wins.
KARINGAL moved into the Peninsula League top five and left Mornington’s season in disarray, charging home for a six-point upset win at Ballam Park.
The Bulldogs looked in total control when they led by 30 points at three quarter-time, but they must have shown a red rag to the Bulls, who came to life and piled on 7.1 to 1.1 in the last quarter overrun last year’s Grand Finalists.
Grant Goodall, captain Aaron Paxton and Tom Wilkinson led the revival for Karingal, while Leigh Poholke kicked four goals and Jake Kelly three.
Jai Haddock and Brendan De Ruyter had put Mornington in a strong position, but at 2-6 the Bulldogs will need a major turnaround in form to make the finals, despite still being just six points out.
Edithvale-Aspendale found its radar at the exactly the right time to overcome a gallant Seaford by 14 points at Miles Reserve. The Eagles did everything possible to kick themselves out of the game, and the Tigers almost took full advantage despite conceding 31 scoring shots to 17.Seaford took the lead late in the game at 12.5 to 9.19, but Edithvale-Aspendale rallied to kick three late goals to claim the points and strengthen its push for a double chance, led by leading goalkicker Mick Meehan’s five majors.
Frankston YCW took a half to get going, but eventually made it 22 wins in a row completed one calendar year without defeat in overwhelming Chelsea by 84 points at John Coburn Oval.
Chelsea led by 12 points at quarter-time and was still within eight at the main change as Grant Trew and Brad Clark started brightly, but YCW piled on 11.18 to 1.2 in the second half, with only poor kicking stopping a bigger result as Paul Minchington kicked five goals.
The Stonecats were last beaten by Mornington on June 6 last year, and it is hard to see them losing again any time soon.
Justin van Unen rediscover his best form to kick six goals as Mt Eliza was untroubled in brushing past Langwarrin by 38 points at Lloyd Park and Tim Bongetti’s five goals helped Pines consolidate second spot with a 33-point win over Bonbeach at the No.1 Oval.
