Red Legs run out of puff
JONTY’S JOTTINGS
Round 7 by Brendan Rhodes
Saturday, 28 May 2016
PENINSULA league superpower Frankston YCW moved into almost unbackable favouritism for a fourth straight flag with a powerhouse 94-point blitzkrieg of its nearest rival Mt Eliza in the Telstra Stores RPP FM 98.7 Match of the Day at Emil Madsen Reserve on Saturday.
The Stonecats stamped their authority on the contest at the Redlegs’ home ground with a six-goal-to-three opening quarter before another seven goals had the result beyond doubt with a 41-point margin on the Rye Hotel Scoreboard by the main break.

With Mornington Peninsula Brewery Player of the Match Paul Minchington (four goals) dominating through the midfield and Kyle Hutchison, Ryley Hodson and Tony Lester also proving untouchable, YCW was able to provide countless opportunities for its powerful forward line.
The in-form David Bodley and Anthony Bruhn cashed in, booting six and five majors respectively, while their teammates took advantage of any crumbs as the Stonecats finished with 10 individual goalkickers.
Things got even worse for Mt Eliza in the second half, with the home team managing just 2.2 after the long break compared to the Stonecats’ 10.7.
Casey Scorpions-listed gun James Freeman, the son of former West Coast and St Kilda player Peter, booted three goals to be his team’s best player in only his third appearance for the Redlegs at any level in the past two seasons.
Matthew Stanley also kicked three goals, while Karl Lombardozzi continued his fine form and David Barton and Daniel Gormley also performed well.
Star forward Justin van Unen was held to just one goal playing further up the ground than he would normally be accustomed to.
Chelsea was once again crippled by its ineptitude in front of goal as Karingal broke through for a second win of the season in a two-point thriller at Chelsea Reserve.
The Bulls built what looked to be a match-winning 34-point lead by half-time before the Seagulls finally spread their wings in the third quarter, kicking 5.4 to 0.2 to slice the deficit to two points turning for home.
Both teams kicked 2.0 straight in the final quarter, with Karingal hanging on to take the points and keep its finals hopes alive and Chelsea left to rue another defeat with more scoring shots (19-16) than its opposition.
Edithvale-Aspendale left Grand Finalist Mornington’s quest for redemption in disarray, overrunning the Bulldogs by eight points at Regents Park.
The Eagles were behind at every change and trailed by 11 points at the last break, but six majors to leading goalkicker Mick Meehan proved too much for Mornington to overcome as it conceded 4.3 to 1.2 in the run home.
Pines moved into second spot on the ladder with a 36-point win over Seaford at Eric Bell Reserve.
As was the case on Easter Saturday, the Pythons’ height proved too much for the Tigers, with Guy Hendry and Aaron Edwards kicking five goals apiece.
After a horror 0-4 start to the season, Bonbeach moved to within two points of the top five with its third straight victory, holding Langwarrin to just two goals in winning by 29 points in a wet weather slog at Lloyd Park.
FRANKSTON asserted its premiership credentials and left Rye’s season hanging by a thread when it belted the Demons by 75 points at Greg Beck Oval.
The Bombers blew Rye away with a powerful 7.5 to 2.0 first term and never looked back, extended their lead at every change on the back of multiple goalscoring options.
Best on ground Sam Fox and Michael Maiorino booted four each among 10 Bombers to hit the scoresheet, while James Degenhardt, Jarryd Amalfi and Jason Kingsbury were also important.
Harry Whitty held up his end for Rye, with Kyle Lynch and Ryan Mullett also performed well in what was otherwise a horror performance.
Tyabb came desperately close to its drought-breaking day of glory for the second game in a row, this time denied by Devon Meadows by five points at Bunguyan Reserve.
The Yabbies traded blows with the Panthers from start to finish, but just two weeks after being denied by two points by Pearcedale, the siren once again sounded at the wrong time to consign them to a 40th consecutive defeat.
Kyle Beveridge and Callum O’Hare were crucial to the win for Devon Meadows, while Simon Rahilly and Josh Connell did everything in their power to get Tyabb over the line.
Tom Baker kicked five goals in his first game of the season as Rosebud moved back into the top five with a 43-point victory over Pearcedale at Olympic Oval, replacing Red Hill after the Hillmen went down to Sorrento by 28 points at David McFarlane Reserve.
Hastings maintained its position a game clear at the top with a 39-point victory over Jekyll and Hyde club Dromana at Thomas Barclay Oval and Somerville retained its top three spot in beating Crib Point by 47 points at Somerville.
