JONTY’S JOTTINGS
Round 6 by Brendan Rhodes
Saturday, 14 May 2016
LAST week, Luke Tapscott was carried off David McFarlane Reserve on a stretcher and taken to hospital for scans on a potentially serious neck injury.
Fast forward seven days, and former Melbourne forward Tapscott completed one of the greatest recoveries seen in recent memory to not only front up for Sorrento against Rye at RJ Rowley Reserve, but kick five goals to lead the Sharks to a dominant 56-point victory.
Tapscott’s Mornington Peninsula Brewery Man of the Match performance was one of many shining lights for the Sharks as they took their next door neighbours apart, winning every quarter for a comprehensive victory that put their slow start to the season firmly into the history books.
Sorrento took control in the Telstra RPP FM Match of the Day from the first bounce, kicking five goals to two in the opening term as Tapscott – lining up deep in the forward line – took advantage of the running dominance of James Brigden, Nick Marston and Zac Byrns.
The Demons tried to work their way back into the contest in the second term through captain Adam Kirkwood and fellow defenders Matt Dunn and Dean Millhouse, but the Sharks held firm through their own rock solid defence headed by Leigh Treeby and Brent Kenyon to extend their lead to 26 points at the main change.
The visitors then sealed the deal in the third term, adding 5.6 to 3.2 before booting seven goals to five in the last quarter for their fifth straight victory, putting 21 majors on the Rye Hotel Scoreboard despite star forwards Nick Corp (two) and Scott Lockwood (one) being well held.
Marston ended with three goals, as did lively youngster Chad Harris among 10 goalkickers, while Matt Greig kicked three for Rye and Ryan Taylor and Adrian Gileno played well, but the Demons slipped to eighth spot, six points outside the top five at the interleague general bye.
Tyabb was left heartbroken after a missed shot at goal after the final siren saw the Yabbies fall two points short of upsetting Pearcedale in a thriller at Pearcedale.
The Yabbies led by nine points at half-time and one at the final change, but their radar deserted them just as the chance to break what is now a harrowing 39-match losing streak was in their grasp, kicking 1.6 to 2.3 in the last term.
Tyabb hasn’t won since defeating Somerville in the final round of the 2013 season, but if it can reproduce that form in such an even competition, surely the club’s greatest celebration in a long time won’t be far away.
Jake Anderson was the dominant forward on the ground with five goals for the Yabbies, while Tyson Sparkes, Josh Connell and Jeremy Daniel also starred, but the Panthers refused to submit to an inspired and desperate opponent, and Troy Jacobson, Ben Mitchell and Travis Bravo did enough to have them in front when it mattered most.
There was also plenty of Dromana drama, where Tigers captain Terry Wheeler unsuccessfully called a head count in the third quarter against Frankston.
The Bombers were found to have the correct number of players on the field and a free kick was paid against the Tigers, with Frankston taking control after the incident to win by 21 points.
Dale Sutton was against best on ground for Frankston with support from Sam Fox, James Degenhardt and four-goal forward Zac Longham, while Sam Guerts was Dromana’s best with three goals and Billy Quigley and Wheeler also worked hard to stay in the game.
Hastings turned on a seven-goal final-term blast to shake off a dogged Crib Point by 49 points at Crib Point.
The Blues had kicked a terrible 5.15 to the final change and led by just 15 points, but found their radar with 7.0 in the last for what eventually was a comfortable win.
Red Hill continued its impressive start to the season in sinking the in-form Somerville by 31 points at Red Hill, dominating after quarter-time, while reigning premier Rosebud shook off Devon Meadows by 17 points in a low-scoring clash at Glover Reserve.
THE Peninsula League is developing into a similarly unpredictable competition (behind Frankston YCW of course), and Langwarrin provided another example of it when it shocked Mornington by 23 points at Alexandra Park.
The Kangaroos entered the clash on the bottom of the ladder, but jumped to a 19-point advantage at quarter-time and then saw off a Bulldogs rally that had the home team in front by half-time.
Led by Nick Tuddenham, Blake Harkness, Matthew Naughton and star forward Kyle Albanese (four goals), Langwarrin kicked three goals to two in the third quarter and four to two in the last to win going away from last year’s grand finalists.
Mornington has yet to hit its straps this season, and sits a game outside the top five at the interleague bye, despite the efforts of Jackson Calder (four goals) and Warwick Miller.
Pines is one of only three teams with a percentage over 100, but the Pythons needed a blistering last quarter to overcome Karingal by 37 points at Ballam Park.
The Bulls led by three points at three quarter-time and Brett Burns, Anthony Joel and Brad Occhipinti could smell an upset, but Pines found another gear to kick 7.5 to 1.1 in the last term.
Guy Hendry and Tim Bongetti kicked five goals each and Beau Hendry was again best on ground for the Pythons, with the result leaving Karingal back on the bottom of the ladder, despite its promising and competitive start to the season.
Chelsea’s goalkicking woes came to the fore yet again as Bonbeach beat the Seagulls by 37 points at Bonbeach to back up its upset of Mt Eliza last week.
The Seagulls had a paltry 2.10 on the board at half-time and trailed by 26 points despite just one less scoring shot, and while they finally found their radar to kick 8.1 in the second half, the damage was done and the Sharks moved off the bottom of the ladder.
Frankston YCW rolled on its merry way, shaking off Edithvale-Aspendale after half-time to win by 58 points at John Coburn Oval.
NEXT WEEK THE TELSTRA RPP FM MATCH OF THE WEEK RETURNS TO RJ ROWLEY RESERVE FOR THE SECOND WEEK IN A ROW, WITH THE PENINSULA LEAGUE AIMING TO SET ITSELF UP FOR A CRACK AT THE STATE TITLES WHEN IT MEETS THE NORTHERN LEAGUE IN THE VICTORIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS. JOIN MICHAEL VOSS AND THE TEAM FROM 1.45PM FOR INTERLEAGUE FOOTY AT ITS BEST.
