Brendan Rhodes-27JONTY’S JOTTINGS

Round 2 by Brendan Rhodes

A POWERFUL performance from Somerville’s big man brigade gave Frankston a stark reminder of what it requires to match the best teams in the Nepean League in the Telstra RPP FM Match of the Day at Greg Beck Reserve on Saturday.

In cold and windy conditions, big men don’t get any smaller, and Eagles vice-captain Scott Simpson was in dominant form, finding allies in Luke Rowe, Ben Crowe, Rohan Hogenbirk and Justin Farrelly as they dominated the aerial duels to cruise to victory by 54 points on the Rye Hotel scoreboard – even more so after the Bombers lost Ryan Kitchin to a hamstring injury in the first quarter.

footy2Somerville was forced to work hard by a confident Bombers outfit coming off two strong wins, with both teams struggling to move the ball with any system.

In fact, the Eagles wasted most of their first quarter with the healthy breeze by chipping the ball across the ground instead of going direct, a game-style that allowed Ryan Marks-Logan, Jarryd Amalfi and Beau Muston plenty of time to set up and repel them when they did go forward.

But Frankston also decided sideways was the way to play when getting the ball as far away from goal would have been the better plan, and Somerville did enough to take a 12-point lead at quarter-time.

The Bombers had the best of the opportunities during their turn with the breeze, with Michael Maiorino (three goals), Dale Sutton, Jay Page and Jason Kingsbury getting involved in the match, but their wasteful finishing (3.6 to 3.1) and the dominance of Somerville co-captain Tim McGenniss, Jedd Sutton and Josh Westerman kept the visitors ahead by seven at the main change.

Frankston needed to hold firm in the third term to give itself a chance of running over the top of the Eagles in the last, but the momentum switched in two quickfire incidents involving coach Muston within minutes.

First, Muston set himself to clear a Somerville kick forward, but completely missed the ball with his attempted fist and it fell to Westerman for the first goal of the term.footy1

Then, he reacted badly to the goading being dished out by his opposite number David Hirst, giving away a free kick at the top of the goalsquare when the ball was over 100m away on Frankston’s half-forward line.

The two majors sent the margin out to 21 points, and the Bombers, while staying within range for the rest of the third quarter, were not going to threaten again as Somerville led by 27 turning for home and opened the floodgates in the last quarter with seven goals to two against the breeze for a comprehensive win.

Scott Simpson, Mornington Peninsula Brewery’s Player of the Day with Toe Punt Kelly

Simpson’s influence wasn’t as important in the last quarter, but he had done enough damage to be the Mornington Peninsula Brewery Player of the Match, narrowly ahead of McGenniss, while Rowe finished with a goal in each quarter.

Shaw and Crowe capped good games with two last-quarter goals each to end with three apiece, Farrelly dominated the ruck against the experienced by undersized Nathan Lonie, while Kane McKenzie, Jacob Wilson and Adam Rose were others to stand out.

Hastings sent shockwaves reverberating around the competition with a scarcely believable 103-point hammering of reigning premier Rosebud at Thomas Barclay Oval.

The Blues had humbled Sorrento at Sorrento in Round 1, but it was this performance that will have rival clubs taking a second look to the east as they dominated from start to finish.

Notably, from Jamie Clarke’s goal that made it 14-26 at the 19-minute mark of the opening term, Rosebud did not kick another until Keegan Downie kicked truly 26 minutes into the last quarter – the final score of the match.

Experienced superboot Matt Greig kicked eight goals as Rye outlasted Devon Meadows by 31 points at Rye.

The Demons led by just nine points at the final change, but the yellow card dished out to the Panthers’ best player Patrick Boland early in the term – after Glenn Michie had also received his marching orders just before three-quarter time – proved to be the final straw.

Eight goals from Ben Mitchell lifted Pearcedale to its first win of the year, outplaying Crib Point by 38 points at Pearcedale, while Red Hill kept Tyabb goalless in the first half before running out 51-point winners at Red Hill.

THE Peninsula League produced two stunning results, but the most surprising was the performance of Seaford, which came from behind to shock Mornington by seven points at RF Miles Reserve.

In a thrilling contest from start to finish, the Tigers led by 12 points at half-time, but the Bulldogs had taken a one-goal advantage by the final change and it looked like order would be restored.

But there were more twists and turns than a Formula 1 track in the last quarter, as Seaford first took back the lead, then saw Mornington move 12 points ahead entering time-on.

Someone forgot to read the script to the Tigers, and they lifted one last time, kicking the last three goals of the match to upstage the Grand Finalists for their first win of the year.

Mitch Finn and Josh Stokes starred for Seaford and Matt Andrews booted five crucial goals, while Warwick Miller and Josh Halsall were outstanding for Mornington and Jackson Calder kicked four.

Chelsea produced a withering final quarter burst of seven goals to two to snatch a draw against Pines at Chelsea Reserve.

After leading by two points at half-time despite kicking a wasteful 5.14, the Seagulls looked dead in the water when the Pythons kicked 6.6 to 1.1 in the third term to lead by 33 points turning for home on the back of another starring role from Beau Hendry and four goals to Aaron Edwards.

But Beau Caia and Corey Edmunds launched a fightback with 7.3 to 2.0 that left the scores locked away at the final siren.

There were no such issues for the two premiership favourites, with Frankston YCW keeping Langwarrin goalless until the final quarter in a 107-point belting at Lloyd Park, while Mt Eliza overcame a gallant early challenge from Karingal to ease home by 63 points at Emil Madsen Reserve.
