JONTY’S JOTTINGS
Round 3 by Brendan Rhodes
THE results of all games in the Peninsula and Nepean leagues were secondary to kick off the Anzac weekend, with a potentially serious neck injury to Tyabb vice-captain Adrian Clay marring the Yabbies’ Nepean league clash with Sorrento at Bunguyan Reserve on Saturday.
Clay was hurt in a collision with a teammate just 30 seconds into the third quarter against the Sharks, with play being held up and then abandoned as an air ambulance was called to transport him to The Alfred hospital.
Thankfully, he started to regain feeling in his legs just before the helicopter arrived, and the news this morning is that initial scans appeared positive.
Sorrento coach Nick Jewell told the Voice of the Peninsula Andrew ‘Toe Punt’ Kelly it was a worrying time for everyone at the ground.
“It was certainly a strange feeling but everyone was just concerned about Adrian and hoping that he was OK,” he said.
With the incident occurring after half-time, the match was awarded to Sorrento, which had conceded just a single behind and led by 67 points, but it was certainly not the way the Sharks would want to record their first win of the year.
Former Melbourne player Luke Tapscott kicked four goals for Sorrento, while Tyrren Head and Chad Harris were prolific, while for the Yabbies, Josh Connell and Luke Rigg fought hard against the tide.
In the Telstra RPP FM Match of the Day, Dromana produced a blistering third quarter and then held tough to sink a wasteful Rye by eight points in a seesawing clash at Dromana.
The Tigers had started well, building a 16-point lead at the first break on the Rye Hotel Scoreboard thanks to strong showings from Billy Quigley and Rory Gregg before the match turned on its head in the second term.
Led by star midfielders Ryan Mullett, who won the Mornington Peninsula Brewery RPP FM Player of the Day for the second time this season, and Kris Barden, the Demons dominated the second term – but they blew their chance to put Dromana away by half-time.
Rye’s six goals to one in the second term gave it a 21-point lead at the main break, but the scoreline of 6.13 to 4.4 left the door ajar for the home team.
And when Steven Daniher missed a set shot from 20m out directly in front early in the third term, the Tigers finally kicked that door down.
Sparked by an inspired display from flanker Beau McMurray, who kicked four goals for the term, Dromana booted six goals to none for the quarter and turned for home with an 18-point advantage.
The Demons were coming home with the wind and rallied one last time, but Dromana was not going to be denied, and when Beau Cosson (three goals) booted a long major with just 55 seconds on the clock, efforts of he, Ricky Johnston, Mitchell Gill-Furness, Dane Leydon-Kozikas were rewarded.
Matt Greig kicked three goals for Rye but was a key offender in front of goals, especially early, while Jackson Wills, Harry Whitty and Kyle Lynch did their best to rescue the situation.
IN THE Peninsula League, Seaford held off a fast-finishing Bonbeach to record its second win in a row by 11 points at Miles Reserve.
The Tigers looked home when they turned a two-point half-time lead into a 28-point gap at the final change, holding the Sharks scoreless as Dean Williamson, Kieren Shaw and the in-form Jackson Mockett took control, but the visitors bared their teeth in the last.
Bonbeach dominated the final quarter through Justin Bennett, Dylan Jones and Gary Carpenter, but poor kicking and desperate defence from Seaford conspired against the visitors, who kicked 3.8 to 1.3 to fall two goals short.
Chelsea had to wait an extra two days to be awarded a victory over Pines on video review last week, but there were no such problems this time as the Seagulls outclassed Langwarrin by 45 points at Chelsea Reserve.
The scoreboard last week had Chelsea winning by a point only to be overruled by the goal umpires, which had the result as a draw – however, a review of video footage showed the scoreboard attendant was in fact correct.
Yesterday, it was a seven-goal to one second term that set the Seagulls on their way, and despite an even second half, they were never threatened.
Matt Baxter and Curtis Bywater kicked four goals each and Todd Gardiner was best on ground for Chelsea, while Kieran Albanese kicked four goals and Shane Paterson starred for the Kangaroos.
