Berisha is the 2016 Mornington BMW Cup winner!
An estimated crowd of over 8,500 watched the 4YO gelding win the golden Cup on a blessed sunny afternoon at the Mornington Racing Club on the weekend.
He was slow out of the barrier for the running of the 2400m listed race and came home by a short nose.
Described as a ‘gentleman’ with a stubborn streak, Berisha automatically goes straight in the running of the Caulfield Cup in this year’s Spring Carnival.
With 18 starts to date and achieving good results in the last four, owner and breeder of Berisha, Simon Cox said, “He wasn’t the easiest horse to train but trainer Robert Smerdon did a great job bringing him to where he is today.”
Jockey Daniel Moor said, “He was a gentleman today and gave me no grief. He was a little slow out of the barrier but I knew he had a chance to win the big one. I was just the ‘pip on the pumpkin’ and let him be the boss.”
Moor started his long association with Smerdon as an apprentice and is hoping he can enjoy the continued journey on the back of Berisha.
Mornington Racing Club General Manager, Stephen Bell said, “I’m delighted with crowd numbers attending our big day. Changing the Cup day from Wednesday to Saturday has brought more punters from the city. The race meet is also attracting big name jockeys, trainers and sponsors – it’s great for Mornington’s local economy and local businesses.”
Mornington BMW Cup Day is the biggest race meetings on Mornington’s racing calendar.
