STAR TALENT HEAD UP THE RPP FM COMMENTARY TEAM THIS FOOTY SEASON

The RPP FM football commentary team is excited to announce another talent to call the RPP FM Match of the Day. Brendan Rhodes will head up the team with the return of another legend football caller Andrew’ Toe Punt’ Kelly for the 2016 season.

Together they will continue to lift the standard of the RPP FM live broadcast every Saturday afternoon during the 2016 MPNFL.

Rhodes, 36, has called 403 matches on radio and television, including AFL NAB Challenge games, WAFL, NEAFL and the Sydney AFL Premier League.

He joins RPP FM from the Ovens and Murray league, where he was the host of the league’s long-term flagship OAKFM commentary team from 2001-05 and again in 2014-15.

Rhodes, better known as Jonty (although he freely admits his cricket ability is far inferior to the South African great), is now a sub-editor at the Herald Sun and is looking forward to joining the team at RPP to further his career behind the microphone.

“I’ve heard a lot of good things about the RPP broadcast and the following and rapport it has with the clubs and supporters of the Peninsula and Nepean leagues,” he said.

“I’ve been close to coming down here for a couple of years, but I’m finally here and can’t wait to start a new season, meet new people and call some quality football.

“These two leagues have produced a lot of AFL footballers, and it will be great to watch the next batch of stars making their way through.

“Please come up and introduce yourself at broadcast games because I’m looking to immersing myself in the culture of these two highly-rated competitions.”

Rhodes will make his debut on RPP FM as the station creates its own slice of history by covering its first Good Friday game live from Olympic Oval this Friday when Nepean league arch-rivals Rosebud and Rye lock horns to open the 2016 season.

Will the Blues be able to back up their sensational 2015 season with a first-up victory, or will the Demons retain the Appleford-Luck Cup they won in the corresponding fixture on Good Friday in 2014.

Rye has won the past three games between these teams, with Rosebud’s last victory coming on Good Friday in 2013.

toeyAndrew ‘Toe Punt’ Kelly is no stranger to the RPP FM football commentators line up. He made his radio debut with RPP FM at the beginning of the 1989 MPNFL season, hosting the RPP FM Footy Show. He has hosted the show every year since which goes to air every Saturday morning 9am – 10.30am during the footy season.

He is proud to say he was the first commentator on RPP FM to call a match live on 98.7FM.

Toey also wrote and read sport on weekends with Austereo (Fox FM) in the mid 1990’s.

In addition to writing for newspapers, he has also been the Nepean League correspondent in the weekly MPNFL Footy Record for more than 20 years.

He has been writing MPNFL Football in local newspapers since 1987 when he began his career with the Rosebud Gazette.

Toey has worked with Standard Newspapers, Leader Newspapers and Fairfax Newspapers, as well as being the Country Football writer for Inside Football for a number of years. For the past four years, h has been the chief football writer for Mornington Peninsula News Group.

Andrew ‘Toe Punt’ Kelly does the majority of this work on a voluntary basis. He is currently the General Manager Marketing for a retail pharmacy group based in Sydney.

vossy1Another very important person in the commentary team is Mr Football himself, Michael Voss. Michael’s dedication and commitment to the game is phenomenal. Known as Vossy the ‘all rounder’, his knowledge on sport and statistics is substantial and surpasses many other commentators in his field. He is also part of The Locker Room program which airs every Saturday on RPP FM between 10.30am and noon.

Michael said, “I do enjoy what I do and because of the fact I was brought up around sport, I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Vossy is heavily relied upon on as the third wheel who forms part of the successful RPP FM football commentary team. He joins Toey and Brendan every Saturday to broadcast the RPP FM Match of the Day.

Listen Good Friday from 2pm for the opening of a mighty clash between Rosebud vs Rye.

RPP FM Match of the Day live coverage would not be possible without the continued support of local businesses.

Pearcedale spin on 272

Saturday, 19 March 2016 So 19 March saw the Grand Finals of the 2015/16 MPCA draw come to a close with two remaining games played in District and Sub-District. The RPP FM Bendigo Bank 'Match of the Day' saw Pearcedale comfortably defend their score of 272 against Flinders in District. It was slow going for Flinders despite a rally led by Andy Power and Blake Hogan-Keogh. Pearcedale were too steady […]
