Sugar n’ Spice talking MKR with locals!
What a delight it was for Bob & Judy, presenters of RPP FM’s Sugar n’ Spice program to meet two local ‘stars’ who are contestants on the current MKR TV cooking reality program, live in the RPP FM studios this week!
Mitch and Laura Skvor, an excited brother and sister act, are the youngest contestants ever to appear on MKR competing in the current cooking series on the Seven Network.

Laura, 19 who is a martial arts expert and Mitch, 21, a laid back sort of a guy, described as a ‘gun surfer’ who is studying to be a Paramedic, were very relaxed in front of the microphones sharing their experience on the reality cooking program.
Bob asked about the MKR audition process which Laura replied, “It’s a very long process – we started by filling out a form on the MKR website, then we received an email asking to fill out three more sets of forms detailing why we love cooking, our style of cooking, our team dynamic and why we’d be good for the show? The process continued with a phone interview, a home visit from producers where we had to cook as many dishes in 15 minutes. The final step is bringing a cooked meal to a location with other state finalists and we critiqued each others cooking including our own.”
Judy commented on their sophisticated cooking techniques, likening them to Heston Blumenthal’s multi-sensory and theatrical type cooking. Mitch added, “We used chips from old oak wine barrels for the smoke under the cloche for our entrée dish of venison.”
Laura is also a talented martial arts exponent who is the protégé of ex-RPP FM breakfast program presenter, Peter Smedley. She is competing in Thailand this April.
“It’s a great mix of people from all walks of life – being young we haven’t been exposed to such a diverse group of interesting people. It’s been an amazing learning curve to get along and deal with them,” Laura explained.

“We are young but we take our food really seriously.” Laura said with Mitch adding, Laura has always had a passion for food, researching and doing a lot behind the scenes where it all started.”
With a high score of 89/100 for their cooking efforts on MKR this week places them as serious contenders to take out winners of this series.
The entertaining interview ended with Bob asking for a basic cooking tip for Judy!
We wish Mitch and Laura continued success with the show. Judy concluded by observing how they are handling the pressure and success so beautifully, so graciously – it’s refreshing.
Good luck Mitch and Laura!
