RPP FM to broadcast The First Shot

At 12.45pm on Tuesday 5 August 2014, a single shot will be fired on the Mornington Peninsula at Point Nepean, Portsea to mark the centenary of a defining moment in our nation’s history and RPP FM local radio will be there to broadcast the remarkable event LIVE!

Join Piers Cunningham, presenter of RPP FM's program Beyond Infinity together with Paul Wattie from Rosebud  Bookbarn, Ange Robinson from The Breakfast Scoop program and The Breakfast Table program and Debra Mar from The Breakfast Table will broadcast a live commentary of events commencing at 11am to bring you all the defining moments of this incredible day in the Australian history books.

Station Manager Brendon Telfer said, “The RPP FM crew are excited to be part of this historic event, broadcasting live from the site.”

“It’s great for local radio to be involved, and with RPP FM’s capabilities, technology and broadcasting expertise, we are proud to be able to facilitate such a commemorative occasion right here on the Peninsula,” he added.

War was declared in Europe at 11pm on Tuesday, 4 August 1914 – London time (9am on Wednesday 5 August – Melbourne time). The first shot in the British Empire was fired from the Coastal Artillery Gun Emplacement No.6 at Fort Nepean, Portsea on 5 August 1914 at 12.45pm, just 3 hours 45 five minutes after war was declared in London.

In attendance will be the Governor of Victoria His Excellency Alex Chernov AC QC who will address the crowd, MP Victorian Minister for Veterans' Affairs The Hon. Damian Drum, Federal Member for Flinders and Environment Minister The Hon. Greg Hunt, Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Cr Antonella Celi and other dignitaries.

Journalist/broadcaster Peter Meehan will MC the event and Australian film and TV actor Bryan Dawe will narrate the WW1 story on the Main Stage.

There will be all the ‘pomp and circumstance’ surrounding an historic occasion such as this including wreath laying, flag raising ceremony, bagpipes, bands, a Tiger Moth flyover and much more.

Everyone is invited to attend The First Shot Commemoration on the 100th anniversary on Tuesday, 5 August 2014 between 11am – 1.30pm 
Point Nepean National Park, Portsea.

Entry is Free.
