The RPP FM Match of the Day for the Peninsula Football Netball League, proudly brought to you by Mornington and Rosebud Telstra Shops, saw second placed Langwarrin Kangaroos host the finals aspiring, sixth placed Bonbeach Sharks in a round five clash at Lloyd Park.
Both teams struggled for early supremacy in the light rain and slippery conditions and it soon became clear that close-in football was to be the order of the day. Whilst Gavin Artico coached Langwarrin and missed a guilt edged chance to open the scoring, it had become a battle for both teams to move the football beyond the half forward line.
It was promising youngster Brad Sykes who opened up the scoring for Bonbeach, followed in rapid succession by a second major from a long goal by the imposing Liam Gales. The Sharks were springing out of defence and running in numbers. Ex-Hawk Beau Muston plucked a strong mark and goaled from close range to peg one back for the Kangas but midfield pressure courtesy of the Sharks’ Matt Clifford saw it answered almost immediately. Jimi Johnson was on the receiving end of a sharp pass from Muston for Langwarrin’s second but a mark and running goal from Shane McDonald restored the two goal buffer.
The second quarter saw Rob Horler evade two tacklers and thread the needle to extend the Shark’s lead and a snap from Brad Sykes sent them further ahead. The Kangaroos had started to settle, however, and a Jimi Johnson major brought the scores closer. A soft free kick for the home side allowed Scott Sienkiewicz to narrow the margin still. A mistake at half back from Bonbeach saw Aaron Shaw pounce to kick a much needed lifter for the Kangaroos and a quick kick from the pack saw Langwarrin take a slender lead. It took a brilliant goal from the boundary from Dylan Jones after the siren which restored the Shark’s lead.
Third quarter action again saw Bonbeach start the better of the two sides through the industrious work of Nathan Hicks and he quickly had another from a smart kick off the ground. Daniel Smith was holding the Sharks’ backline together and Dylan Jones was continuing to provide plenty of drive from the ruck. Jimi Johnson presented once more for Langwarrin and kicked truly from deep in the right pocket to keep them in touch. Sean Herdman added to his tally with a third and when Michael Parker accepted a handball over the top from 30 metres out, the Kangaroos found themselves in front. Matt Clifford marked and goaled to restore the lead for Bonbeach and a classy goal from Travis Johnstone gave the Sharks a little breathing space. Langwarrin replied through Matthew Naughton to be only a solitary goal down going into the break.
RPP FM’s very own Michael ‘Golden Tonsils’ Voss and Brad 'Tangles' Kingsbury brought us home with all the last quarter action as Bonbeach looked to hang on. And it was the livewire Brad Sykes who again bobbed up to kick the first of the term. Chances were going begging down both ends but when Blake Peach held on to a chest mark at full forward and converted suddenly, we had a five point game going into time on. Another chance went begging for the Roos and in a gripping final few minutes, Bonbeach held the home side at bay to register a well-deserved four point win.
Hayley from Orbit Fitness Mount Martha was on hand to present the Player of the Day trophy to Bonbeach’s Matt Clifford. A relieved Matt spoke to RPP FM commenting that his side had simply ‘hung tough in the final stages and had never doubted their ability to get over the line’. Sharks Coach Steve Capp was similarly pleased noting that 'despite injuries to Gary Carpenter, Mark Tyrell and Josh Bull the side had continued to push and, for that alone; this was one of the grittier wins'.
