Excitement swept through the corridors of the RPP FM Studios with the anticipation of a new program dedicated to basketball called Full Court Press program.

Full Court Press was broadcast ‘live to air’ for the first time on Friday night with a ‘slam dunk’ reception, proudly sponsored by the newly founded Peninsula Bobcats Basketball Club.

Presented by Darren Smith, an advertising and media guru, a State representative basketballer with a deep passion for the game and is part of The Locker Room program on RPP FM together with Manny Hendrix Jnr., a high-flying US import who plays for Western Port Steelers and is their Big Star & Development Officer, began by introducing the newly created Bobcats Basketball Club as the major sponsor of Full Court Press.

Darren Mahony-Walsh, founder and Director of the Bobcats Basketball Club joined Full Court Press to introduce the objectives, mission and culture behind the Club. Mahony-Walsh was concerned about the state of domestic basketball and believed it wasn’t receiving the attention it deserved at grassroots level with associations not investing time and effort to raise the profile of the game.

Mahony-Walsh continued to explain that the newly formed Bobcats Basketball Club was not about ‘pinching’ players from other clubs, rather it’s about growing and strengthening the basketball brand on the Peninsula at grassroots level. He said, “We talk to schools to get young children involved, giving them and the game the opportunity to be recognised outside the Peninsula zone by conducting training programs and clinics.”

“We see ourselves as the catalyst to advocate the basketball brand into the community to increase the standard,” he said.

As part of our commitment and care to the community Bobcats are involved in the Aus Sport Active after School Care program, conducts clinics locally and Aussie Hoops.

Hendrix Jnr. is part of these programs particularly Aussie Hoops giving young children an opportunity to play basketball stating, “I believe it helps keep them off the streets.”

Teams currently vary from U/12’s – U/18’s, boys and girls and have entered into Frankston District Basketball Association and Southern Peninsula Basketball Association, taking expressions of interest to join the Westernport Basketball Association. Watch this space because the Bobcats Basketball Club has grand plans for competition early 2015 and will base their Club at the newly created facilities of David Collins Leisure Centre once completed.

Full Court Press presenters interviewed their first guest Lauren Cooper, a Westernport Steelers player and coach and introduced their weekly segment called ‘Heroes & Villains’ which looks at basketball clubs and individuals behaviour and antics, on and off the court.

Smith & Hendrix Jnr. believe Full Court Press is the only known 1 hour sporting radio program on the Peninsula dedicated to basketball.

Take a fresh look at basketball and join Darren Smith and Manny Hendrix Jnr. every Friday at 6pm on Full Court Press providing local, NBL, NBA and International basketball news, interviews, fixtures, results, ladders, statistics and events. There will be no dribbling or fouls here on Full Court Press!
