The day was set for punters to try their luck trackside at the 2014 Sportingbet Mornington Cup Day but others were happy participating in ’marqueed’ events in the Fashions on the Field precinct as Debra Mar discovered when she conducted live crosses to the studios of RPP FM with presenter Keith Horner’s morning program, The Sunnyside of Life and Drive Time with presenter Dennis Gist.
The 2014 Sportingbet Mornington Cup Day held on Wednesday, 12 February attracted huge crowds, high profile jockeys such as Damien Olivier, Chris Symons and Glen Boss and horse trainers such as Gai Waterhouse but there is another type of ‘filly and stallion’ who hang about in marquees to enjoy the flow of bubbles. Parading fashionistas work the grounds with ‘matched back’ colourful hats fit for Royal Ascot.
This year’s entrants to the 2014 BMW Fashions on the Field saw highly styled men and women pointing the catwalk standards sky high. Beautifully presented and inspiring Face of Mornington Racing Club Jessica Whitfort hosted the event. (Jessica is also part of The Locker Room, the RPP FM sporting program aired live every Saturday at 10.30am on 98.7FM & 98.3FM Frankston).
Winner of the 2014 BMW Fashions on the Field 18 – 40 category was Bree Beatson from Newborough who took away $30,000 worth of prizes including a return trip to the US. Her ensemble was chic with a long pencil skirt in a striking off white, brown and black geometric pattern cleverly co-ordinated with an off white crop top and anklet shoe. Her headpiece made by her aunt and milliner Mandy Fanning, finished the overall sophisticated look.
Runner up Lucy Atkins also looked beautiful. Her birds nest headpiece was designed and made by local milliner Annette Sanfilippo. Lucy is the owner of Herman, a women’s clothing boutique in Mornington who dressed Jessica Whitfort in a designer label sass & bide number.
The Beehive Marquee in the Fashions on the Field precinct was the place to be seen. Annette Sanfilippo, (who was interviewed on RPP FM’s The Breakfast Show with host Debra Mar this week), and Dee Worrell, co-founders and Queen Bees of The Beehive Marquee had many drones to help put this great day together. The Beehive is in it’s third year at the track and is growing in popularity each year. With a luncheon and bubbles and live entertainment and dancing, everyone had a buzzing time with famous flamboyant milliner Peter Jago ‘movin’ and groovin’ about the place. Proceeds raised in the marquee go to the Wig Library in Mornington.
Dee is also a local milliner and won the Marvellous Millinery category.
The 2400m Sportingbet Mornington Cup ran at 4.40pm was won by imported stayer Instrumentalist, ridden by C Newitt.
This special day for the Mornington Peninsula has surpassed any country horse racing meet being the most lucrative country cup in Victoria. From 2015, this social calendar event will change from a Wednesday to a Saturday.
See you next year at the 2015 Sportingbet Mornington Cup.
