WHY THE COMMUNITY CELEBRATES THE ICONIC FRANKSTON FORESHORE
The Frankston Shire is the proud host of the Waterfront Festival on the famous Frankston waterfront precinct. Known as a fishing village in the 1800’s and with the arrival of Melbourne railway in 1882, the Frankston foreshore became a fashionable holiday resort for Melbourne’s affluent. It was where a 1959 Hollywood movies was filmed, it has been written about in history books and novels, it attracts locals, visitors and holiday makers to enjoy the sand and sea and in March 2014 the Ironman Asia-Pacific Championship will be held there. In 2007 Frankston won the Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria’s clean beach challenge, an award for the ‘Friendliest Beach in Victoria’ and the ‘Natural Heritage Award’ for the maintenance of the beach and it’s facilities and finally in 2008, Frankston was named Victoria's most sustainable city in the Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria's Sustainable Cities Awards.
