Jacki Mitchell, RPP FM presenter of her captivating weekly radio program aptly titled Taking Care of Business, is high on the airway radar across the Mornington Peninsula and beyond. She has captured the imagination of dedicated listeners who get their weekly dose of topical issues facing large and small businesses in today’s marketplace. The program is full of tips on marketing, finance, management and expert opinions with insider knowledge on all things business.
Every week Jacki interviews high profile and local business people on her program with a focus on their successes, failures, lessons learned and ideas.
Last Friday in Studio 2, Jacki discussed the topic of NETWORKING with special guest Jane Nathan, an experienced business woman and mother of five who was the first female Committee Member of the Melbourne Cricket Club, served as a member on 34 Boards and Committees with a long list of other well connected and commended positions held in private and government sectors. She was Mayor of Hawthorn and was a finalist in the Telstra Business Women’s Awards 1996.
Jacki’s additional guests to discuss the business of NETWORKING was local businesswomen Su Pilkington, Secretary of Mornington Peninsula Business Network and Jo Schutt of Bloom Networking.
Jane opened the discussion explaining that as humans we are basically tribal with tribal traits, connecting with people on multiple levels. Networking is about trust and following through leads, and as a respected business woman offering her expertise and varied experiences in retail, marketing and local government she understands the importance of building a business with people around you who you trust.
She believes life is serendipitous so grooming your capabilities and being resolute and determined will help achieve your goals. “You only get back what you are prepared to put in,” she said.
Su added that Networking is a channel to meet people, referrals by other contacts and has copious benefits that build relationships, friendships and fellowships. Getting ahead sometimes does comes from ‘Who you Know not ‘What you Know’.
Some handy tips shared by Jacki’s guests:
- Everyone has a story so ask about them because usually people are happy to talk about themselves.
- Never leave the house without your business cards and leave one side of the card blank so people you meet can write notes.
- Take note of Dress Codes. If you appear dressed like ‘them’, they will like you.
- Smile and be conscious of your body language and presentation.
- Nurture your connections and follow up.
- Visit their workplace or arrange to meet for a coffee.
- Get people you meet to remember you.
- Sound passionate.
- Be your own brand.
- ‘Walk the Talk’ and make sure you have your ‘elevator pitch’ perfected.
