A filled room of art lovers waited with excitement and anticipation for the announcement of the 14th Annual Continental Hotel Art Prize winners held on the weekend.
RPP FM radio program Arts About! was part of the scene pre-recording their Sunday’s program live from the event which will air on 98.7FM this Sunday, 24 November at 11am. The Arts About! crew, made up of Swanny, Sally Baillieu, Cliff Ellen and local artist John Baird interviewed Gabe North (affectionally known as Dr Gabe) and Donna Magree about this years Art Prize the artworks. The crew bumped into Ronnie Charles from THE GROOP and talked about his love of art and music.
The Continental’s Art Curator, Stahle Spencer opened proceeding by saying this is the highest calibre of artwork seen at the Art Prize entered by 100 talented artists.
A ‘forward thinking’ idea by one of the hotel’s owners Rick Di Pietro, in collaboration with local artist John Baird decided to add interest to the hotel’s spectacular wall space 14 years ago and display artwork to help promote and support the talent of local artists.
This year’s main judge Gabe North, assisted by Donna Magree gave their commendations and comments on noted artworks. The Linda Gebar Encouragement Award, valued at $500 was announced by Susie Gebar and presented to young artist Claire Zielinski for her Pencil & Charcoal artwork titled Beach Beauty Sorrento Memories 1944.
The ‘one off’ special prize of a signed, limited edition book from German artist Albert Oehlen and generously donated by Paul Wattie from Rosebud Bookbarn was presented by John Baird and awarded to local artist Ann-Heather White for her oil painting titled Could be Low Tide.
The overall winner of the 14th Annual Continental Hotel $1,500 Art Prize was awarded to Monique Keel for her Linocut Print titled It’s a Dog Life. Monique, proud of her achievement said winning was a huge surprise and a complete buzz. She added, “This is Rosie my dog and captures the moments of what happens around her life.” This work is one print in a series of six lino works.
There is a lot of passion, sensibility and inspiration to be viewed and admired on the walls of the historical Continental Hotel in Sorrento and will continue to hang until February 2014. All artwork is for sale.
Congratulations to all winners who provided incredible pieces of artwork, some quirky, some thought provoking, some emotional and some just damn right obscure. See you next year at the 15th annual Continental Hotel Art Prize.
