There was ‘hype’ in the corridors of RPP FM studios this week when a cameraman arrived to film part of a documentary called A LIFE UNEXPECTED: The Man behind the Miracle Mile.

Writer and Director Sally McLean and Executive Producer Robert L Galniski, joined Bob & Judy on their radio program Sugar n’ Spice to talk about their documentary relating to the life of Olympic legend Franz Stampfl featuring Sir Roger Bannister, Sir Christopher Chataway, John Landy, Ron Clarke, Herb Elliott, Roy Emerson, David Williamson, Steve Hooker, (Pole Vaulter who is currently on TV lifestyle program Dancing with the Stars) & more.

Producer and cameraman Ben Steel, who played Jude Lawson in TV drama Home and Away, filmed behind the scenes as the interview went ‘live to air’ and will feature in the documentary.

The ‘doco’ is the untold and inspirational story of artist turned world-renowned athletics coach Franz Stampfl. Through interviews, re-enactments and archived material, it shines a light on an nearly forgotten hero of the sporting and motivational arenas. He was a man who inspired others to strive for excellence in their own lives and careers with wisdom, laughter and by the example of his own life experience. The story follows Franz from the beginning of WW2 in Austria, breaking the Four Minute Mile record, the Melbourne Olympic Games and the changing face of sport, through to his death in 1995 as a quadriplegic.
Sally spoke candidly about interviewing Sir Roger Bannister and Sir Christopher Chataway at the track in the UK where the Four Minute Mile made the history books and said, “After the interview it was an outer body experience thinking, did we just do an interview with Sir Roger and Sir Christopher?”

Filming took place in UK, US and Australia and uses rare archive footage, audio and stills.
In another life Sally was one of the original presenters on RPP FM over 20 years ago and talked about the fun she had with other presenters and what antics they got away with in those days!

Watch for this amazing documentary which is hoping to hit the cinemas in 2014/15, showing all of us that anyone, anywhere can do anything if they just believe in themselves.
