Main Street Mornington Festival highlights from the crew at RPP FM local radio station.

Huddled together, up close and personal backstage with three young band members called The Basics, RPP FM breakfast presenter Pete Smedley had the fortune to interview lead vocalist Wally de Backer, aka Gotye, bassist Kris Schroeder and guitarist Tim Heath to talk about their journey as a band that formed over 10 years ago. Apart from Pete asking where do they find the time to ‘mow the lawn’, locally raised Wally said the band is currently busy playing local gigs and festivals around Fitzroy and Collingwood.

The Basics performed on the Grand Hotel stage drawing the biggest crowd on the day with fans dancing, clapping and singing to The Basics music, a mixture of genres from ‘indie-pop’, rock n’ roll and non-instrument ‘soft voiced’ melodies to belting out heavy metal numbers with three big voices to match. The Basics won the moment.

Pete also took the opportunity to interview Blues band Dreamboogie who also performed on the Grand Hotel Stage. This three membered band just returned on a trip from Memphis USA to deepen their love of Blues and learn more about its origins. Rebecca, lead vocalist said the trip was very educational and provided a real insight into the soul of Blues. She added, “ Blues was born when instruments were confiscated from slaves in the deep south and all they had was their voices and bodies therefore clapping and body movement became part of the Blues soul”. Dreamboogie’s flamboyant and deep, rich Blues performance had the audience clapping and toe tapping.

Pete also interviewed Marty Williams, another local performing artists.

While the sun shone on Main Street Mornington, the crowds swelled during the course of the day enjoying live entertainment and performances, kids activities and a fashion show.  Adding to the atmospheric street,  great ‘festival food’ and local wine were available. Where else would you want to be!

This is a festival that continues to bring the community together, gaining strength year after year. Everyone had a wonderful time and all look forward to the 19th annual Main Street Mornington Festival in 2014.

Listen to the backstage interviews from the Festival across selected programs on RPP FM this week.
