Under a sky of excitement and vivacity, the 11th annual Somers Arts Fair held at Somers Primary School attracted huge crowds on the weekend.

The RPP FM Arts About! presenters stood by at the Fair to take over from presenter Bob Phillips at the RPP FM studios after his Late, Late Brekky Show, to begin their first Outside Broadcast.

Swanny & Sally, part of the Arts About! team interviewed Arts Fair Co-ordinator Karina Smith who said, “ The Fair is a major fundraiser for Somers Primary School basing it’s success on art.” She explained that monies raised on the day will go towards books, shade cloths, computers and more importantly this year, air-conditioning. During the hour long program, Swanny and Sally were joined by other team members, John and Cliff.

Marketing Co-ordinator, Diana Nutting said, “The Fair embraces communities which bring generations of families together each year including performers and exhibitors.”

Kids were on Cloud 9 choosing from a smorgasbord of funfair food including popcorn and lolly bags washed down with a $2 Spider (not the 8 legged variety). Children and parents also enjoyed traditional family games such as the Egg n’ Spoon Race and Tug-of-War.

The Art Auction showcased donated artworks by local artists. Crowds bid frantically to score a piece of Somers-centric artworks such as Monique Morey’s pastel-work called Summer Day at SGS and local famous cartoonist Geoff Hook OAM – his watercolour artpiece called From Merricks – Western Port Bay.

The Art Exhibition displayed a range of raw, hidden talent to well-known artists and the Totem Poles, the signature art piece of the Fair is growing in popularity and demand year by year.

The RPP FM Outside Broadcast took a ‘split’ from the stage where performers such as Gossamer Pride, The Supergroup and Deep Street Soul, an amazing seven piece funk and soul group entertained the crowds.

Other entertainment and performances included the Frankston RSL Pipes and Drums, Somers Probus Men’s Choir and the Somers Primary School Choir.

The Somers Arts Fair is one of the Peninsula’s unique events, inspired by diversity and creativity our ‘backyard’ is renowned for. It’s perfect for ‘art aficionados’ mixed with a wonderful country flair and community vibe. The Creative Art Workshops, exhibitions, mixed media installations, sculptures, a boutique market offering local handcraft, homewares and jewellery and local gourmet food and wine, made the annual Fair a must for your social calendar.

It’s about art, its’ about music, and more importantly it’s about the community embracing the spirit that lives deep within the bones of Somers.
