This weekend’s live football action took RPP FM commentator Michael ‘Vossy’ Voss from sand and sea to Visy Park in Carlton to broadcast the VCFL Country Championships Match of the Day between Peninsula League and Ovens & Murray League.

Jake Bourke, sports writer for Albury-Wodonga’s The Border Mail travelled down the Hume to sit behind the mic with Vossy in the commentary box.

Peninsula players led the game to the final score on the Pest Free scoreboard, 15-10-100 to Ovens & Murray 7-13-55. Peninsula had a strong defence O&M couldn’t match going down to a disappointing result.

The clash saw 16 out of the 22 committed players on the Peninsula team make their debut in Country Championships, and as a cohesive side who trained well in the lead up to today’s match brought the scores home to a 45 point win.

Coach of O&M Matt Pendergast will be disappointed with the effort his boys put in as he believed they would come out on top being the favourites with a bit more experience around the paddock.

Peninsula coach Stephen Ryan came into the clash knowing O&M were the favourites on the day but was delighted with the win, competing with a fourth-ranked league side against his third-placed Peninsula Football League.

With the high standard of VCFL, Ryan had to look further afield to put together a new-look side after the MPNL divided it’s interleague into three units.

Peninsula player Ben Lean was awarded with the RPP FM Best on Ground trophy who was one of many who contributed to the victory.

Good job to the Peninsula boys who were supported well on the day with their fans cheering them on.
